Providing positive mental health in teens has long been a top priority for parents and mental health workers. In the past decade, this has been a growing concern as the numbers have been moving in the wrong direction as far as depression, self-harm, anxiety, and suicide in youth.
A new study published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that usage in social media is linked to causing the increase in teens experiencing mental distress. These findings are concerning as many teens across the globe participate in social media platforms several hours per day. The study shows that, in as little as ten minutes of engagement a day, a teens’ mental distress is affected.
So what are we to do? The new study recommends limited, no removing, teens screen time and involvement. Parents can help their kids by setting a good example and placing screen time limits as a family, spending more time together, and encouraging in personal relationships.
